PERIODIC MAINTENANCE

VALVE CLEARANCE

• Remove the seat. (!5-2)
• Remove the radiator covers and fuel tank. (!5-2)
• Disconnect the ignition coil/plug cap. (!2-7)
• Remove the spark plug. (!2-7)
• Remove the cylinder head cover and its cylinder head cover
gasket.
The valve clearance specification is different for both intake and
exhaust valves.
Valve clearance adjustment must be checked and adjusted: 1)
at the time of periodic maintenance, 2) when the valve mecha-
nism is serviced, and 3) when the camshafts are removed for
servicing.
NOTE:
* The piston must be at top dead center (TDC) on the compres-
sion stroke in order to check or adjust the valve clearance.
* The valve clearance should only be checked when the engine
is cold.
• Remove the TDC plug 1 and crankshaft hole plug 2.
• Place a wrench over the crankshaft and turn it counterclock-
wise to align the TDC mark A with the center of the grooves
B of the timing inspection hole.
NOTE:
The piston must be at TDC on the compression stroke. (!6-3)
• Insert a thickness gauge between the tappet and the cam. If
the clearance is out of specification, adjust it to specification
as follows.
• Place a wrench over the crankshaft and turn it counter-clock-
wise to align the TDC mark A with the center of the grooves
B of the timing inspection hole.
# Valve clearance (when cold):
Standard: IN. : 0.09 – 0.16 mm (0.004 – 0.006 in)
EX. : 0.17 – 0.24 mm (0.006 – 0.009 in)
