Non-FFS Partitions

Non-FFS Partitions include software and data pre-loaded on your terminal. Unlike FFS
Partitions, these partitions are not visible when the operating system is running. They also
contain system information. Non-FFS Partitions include the following:

Downloading Partitions to the Terminal

TCM is used to specify a hex destination file for each partition and download each file to the
terminal. This download requires a program loader stored on the terminal. The terminal
comes with a program loading utility, Initial Program Loader (IPL), stored in the terminal's
write-protected flash.
The terminal must be inserted in a cradle or connected to a host PC by direct serial connection
for downloading to occur. Following is an overview of the steps needed to allocate partition
contents and download the hex files to the terminal.
1. On your host PC, use Windows
partitions to create Source Root Directories. Application and Data Partitions may be
modified to include your own software and data files. The Platform Partition may
also be modified, but with extreme caution.
2. Set TCM to point to a specific Source Root Directory tree (assembled in Step 1) as
the source for each partition. TCM converts each Source Root Directory tree, its
files, its child directories, and all their files to a Source Image File in binary format.
3. Specify a hex destination filename. TCM converts each binary Image File to a hex
Destination Image File.
4. Download all or selected hex destination files to the terminal.
