3.3 Adjusting for Optimum Picture Quality
3.3.1 Input Levels—Computer Sources
The electronics module must know what the source means by "black" and "white." Black Level must
be done before White Level. Always use an external black and white picture from the source. Do not
use these level adjustments to adjust the color.
Rule #1: These instructions apply only to
computer sources. The menus are different for
video sources.
Rule #2: Always do Black Level before White
Level.
Rule #3: Always use a test pattern coming from
the actual computer that will be computer that
will be the source of program material. (It
doesn't make sense adjust the black level to one
computer and then use a different computer,
with a different black level, for the program
material.)
Input Black and White Level adjustments are
easy, because they are done automatically with a
simple button push. All you need is a black
picture and a white picture coming from the
computer that is the source of program material.
Here's what to do using the remote control:
1. Generate a black picture from the source
computer. Any picture that is completely
black in the area behind the upper left
corner of the Black Level menu (seen in a
moment) will work. It must be completely
black, not just very dark gray. When in
doubt, make a black signal with Windows
Paint, as described on page 7-18.
2. On the remote, press
the Black Level menu. Black must be done
before White.
3. Highlight Auto and press
than two seconds the electronics will
automatically detect the incoming signal's
black level and adjust to it.

Note: Do not be concerned with the numbers listed
in the Level column. They are arbitrary. The
numbers in the Sample column will all be
close zero at the end of the automatic Black
Level process.
4. Press
again. This opens the White
LEVEL
Level menu.
5. Generate a white signal from the
computer source.
6. Highlight Auto and press
automatic process takes longer than the
black adjustment, but it is still only five
seconds or so. When the numbers stop
changing, it's finished.
Note: Again, don't worry about the Level numbers.
This time the Sample numbers will all be
close to 255 when the process is complete.
7. Press
again to exit the menu.
LEVEL
You can get to the Black and White Level menus
from the main menu by selecting Input Level.
However, it is much faster to press the special
button, and this route takes you through
LEVEL
the level menus in the correct order.
It is possible to adjust these levels manually, but
there is no reason to do this. The automatic
method is more accurate and much faster than
the manual method, so the manual method will
not even be described. Stick with automatic.
Everybody does.
