Maintenance

Warning: Always completely disconnect the
device from the power supply before performing
maintenance or electrical work.
The Solar Hot Water System should be monitored
on at least a monthly basis, by checking system
pressures, flows and temperatures to ensure that
they are within normal operating range. These
ranges can be found in the operation Section of
the manual and the Warranty Sheet.
The entire system, both the Solar Heating sys-
tem and the Back-up heating system, should be
inspected on a yearly basis, Fall is suggested, to
ensure proper operation and condition of each
component.
Warning: The components and liquid in the
system can be hot and the risk of burning/scald-
ing will be present.

Solar Collectors

When maintaining the Solar Collectors, the follow-
ing should be inspected:
Visually check for shading of the collectors
during the day (mid-morning, noon, and mid-
afternoon) on an annual basis. Shading can
greatly affect the performance of solar col-
lectors. Vegetation growth over time or new
construction on your house or your neighbor's
property may produce shading that wasn't
there when the collectors were installed.
Ensure that there is no build up of dirt on the
panels and clean if necessary, using a soft
cloth and warm soapy water.
Look for cracks in the collector glazing, and
check to see if seals are in good condition.
plastic glazing, if excessively yellowed, may
need to be replaced.
Ensure that the sensor is fully inserted.
Take note of the condition of the sensor wire.
Ensure that there is no damage to the protec-
tive coating and that all connections are still
intact.
!
nOTE: When replacing parts of the insulation
ensure the sensor cable is protected from getting
damaged when cutting the insulation.
Figure 23
Roof penetrations - Flashing and sealant
around roof penetrations should be in good
condition.
Support structures - Check all nuts and bolts
attaching the collectors to any support struc-
tures for tightness.

Piping

There is no specific maintenance that is required
for the piping. A visible inspection is all that is
required. Ensure that there are no signs of leaking
or large areas of rusting that could begin to leak,
check that all of the insulation is present and ac-
cess to the Solar Controller, pressure relief valves,
and the connecting cables is ensured.
Pumping Stations - Solar Loop and
HXa
Inspect all piping connections for tightness and
leaks, ensure that insulation is not showing any
signs of degradation or damage, and repair/re-
place as necessary.
on the Solar pumping Station inspect the condition
of the polypropylene Glycol through the flow meter.
The polypropylene Glycol should be a clear yel-
low color, if it appears to be slightly cloudy or black
it will need to be replaced. The pH of the solution
should be taken on a yearly basis to help deter-
mine the condition beyond color change.
!
nOTE: Consult Safety Data Sheets/MSDS Data
