proper lubrication of ball oilers shown in
Figures 35–36 is done with a pump-type oil can
that has a plastic or rubberized cone tip (see
Page 26 for offerings from grizzly). We do not
recommend using metal needle or lance tips, as
they can push the ball too far into the oiler, break
the spring seat, and lodge the ball in the oil galley.

push the tip of the oil can nozzle against the ball
oiler to create a hydraulic seal, then pump the oil
can once or twice. if you see sludge and contami-
nants coming out of the lubrication area, continue
pumping the oil can until the oil runs clear. When
finished, wipe away the excess oil.

use the component controls to access all sur-
faces, then clean them with mineral spirits, shop
rags, and, where appropriate, brushes.
When dry, apply a thin coat of oil to the surfaces.
use clean brushes to apply oil to the grooves of
the column rack. Move each component through
the entire path of travel several times to distribute
the lubricant.
Note: Take care not to remove the quill rack
grease without re-applying it.
