Troubleshooting

This lesson describes the service tools available for troubleshooting the printer. It also presents
information for troubleshooting specific types of product failures including error codes,
print-quality problems, electronics, and printhead issues.

Service Tools

The Phaser 8400/8500/8550 Color Printer Service Manual is the primary service tool for the printer. It
contains the service information for all three printer models including troubleshooting procedures and parts
replacement instructions. Always follow the procedures in the manual closely in order to successfully
troubleshoot failures and replace service parts. In addition to the Service Manual, use the following tools
when servicing the printer:
Torque screwdriver - Xerox part number 003082700
T-20 screwdriver tip - Xerox part number 003086600
Grease - Xerox part number 006799700
Service Diagnostics mode
Xerox knowledge base
Service Flashes and Service Bulletins
See "Resources" on page 94 for additional sources of service information.

Error Codes

The printers report error codes using the Control Panel display, the status LED, and the PS & PE LEDs
located just above the Power Switch. Troubleshooting procedures for each error code are provided in the
Error Message and Codes section of the Service Manual. This topic describes how to recognize and
troubleshoot BIST/POST codes, PEST errors, jam codes, and print engine fault codes.
BIST and POST Errors
Immediately after the Power Switch is turned on, the printer performs Built-In Self Tests (BIST) followed by
Power On Self Tests (POST). BIST errors are reported by blinking a code on the PS and PE LEDs because
the tests occur before the Control Panel is initialized. POST testing occurs after Control Panel initialization,
so errors can be reported on the Control Panel display. POST errors are also reported by blinking the printer's
LEDs, while non-critical errors are reported on the Startup Page. Troubleshooting procedures for each BIST
and POST error are located in the Error Messages and Codes section of the Service Manual.
