Reporting Ink Level Status
After the "ink low" message is displayed, the printers can make about 1000 more prints at 5% coverage of the
low color before displaying "ink out". The printers have several ways to report the ink level status:
Control Panel status messages for ink low and ink out (Phaser 8500 and 8550 printers indicate
which color is out, while Phaser 8400 printers do not)
Windows printer driver Paper/Quality properties page (status window)
CentreWare IS Status page
If connected via TCP/IP, PrintingScout reports when ink is out
Phaser 8400 printers indicate ink is low
when any color reaches the center of the
last oval hole in the ink load bin, where
the "ink low" sensor is located. When ink
is out, the ink sticks for one or more colors
are below the bottom of the hole. In the
example to the right, yellow and black are
low while magenta is out of ink.
On Phaser 8500 and 8550 printers, users
should add any color that is below the
"ink low" sensor. These printers have
individual "ink out" sensors for each ink
stick color, so the Control Panel can
indicate which color is out.
