Network Diagnostics

Start and runtime logs for diagnosing network problems are available using the menu path
Troubleshooting...Network Problems...Network Log Pages. Network log pages for TCP/IP and
AppleTalk are provided.
A Network Diagnostics tool is provided on Phaser 8500
and 8550 printers. To access Network Diagnostics:
Scroll to Troubleshooting and press OK.
Scroll to Network Problems and press OK.
Scroll to Network Diagnostics and press OK.
The Network Diagnostics process takes about 60 seconds to test the network connection and report errors. It
checks for common causes of communication problems such as collisions, Ethernet speed
mis-configurations, missing hubs (when a crossover cable is not in use), and inappropriate IP settings for the
detected network type or server. In addition to Network Diagnostics, the standard Network Log Pages are
available for troubleshooting.
If a printer is available, disconnect the Ethernet cable and run Network
Diagnostics to see how the printer reports the error. Then, connect the cable
and run diagnostics again to see how it reports a successful test.

Test Windows Ethernet Port (Alternate Procedure)

The printers' Ethernet port can be tested by using a crossover cable and the "PING" command. The Test
Ports topic on the training CD-ROM explains how to enable communication by setting a static IP address in
the printer to match the PC's IP address range. If the PC's IP address falls within the range 169.254.xxx.xxx,
an alternate procedure is required to test the printer (see below). PCs that have not been configured for a
specific network default to a "LOCAL LINK" value that begins with "169.254".
To comply with industry standards, Phaser 8400, 8500, and 8550 printers
cannot be manually configured for IP addresses in the LOCAL LINK range.
Use the following procedure to test the printer when the PC's IP address begins with "169.254":
Always print the Configuration Page to obtain a record of the printer settings
before changing the IP address. After testing the printer, be sure to restore
the printer's original network settings.
1. Connect a crossover cable between the PC and printer.
2. Verify the printer is "Ready To Print".
