LaCie Professional Server
Technical Brief: RAID

5. RAID - Five Disk Server

5.1. Default RAID

The default RAID configurations for the 5big Storage Server are
based upon the general requirements of an active business that
wants to keep data and the server operating system safe. While La-
Cie believes the default RAID configurations to be suitable for most
networks, there may be environments that require an alternative set-
up. Since any change in RAID for one or multiple volumes will delete
data, administrators should consider the solutions that best suit the
needs of an office before using the server.
EXAMPLE:
A Share (see
Technical Brief: Shared
Finance Reports 2009
has been created on the volume Data. This
Share contains all important financial documents from the year
2010. Data, by default, is a RAID 5 volume. If an administrator
decides to break up the
Data
volumes, the Share
Finance Reports 2009
deleted.
LaCie highly recommends that customers backup all data stored on
their professional server. You may use USB 2.0 or eSATA external
desktop drives by connecting them to the server ports or backup to a
separate network server. If all files on the LaCie server are regularly
backed up, the risk of losing data when adjusting RAID configura-
tions is dramatically reduced.
