6.4. Boot Order and Creating the
System Mirror
All Windows Storage Server system files are duplicated on each disk
in the mirror. In most instances, when there are two versions of a
Windows operating system, the user is prompted to select one as the
device boots. Since a monitor and keyboard are required to choose
the boot disk, your 5big Storage Server has turned off this option to
save the user time when booting the device.
EXAMPLE:
By default, the 5big Storage Server boots from the first
disk with an operating system. In this case, that is Disk 0
(Fig.
20). If
Disk 0 should experience a problem or the operating system is dam-
aged, the 5big Storage Server will boot from Disk 1 without forcing
any action from the user. However, this option will be lost if the user
has performed a recovery, reinstalling Windows Storage Server, or is
adding additional drives to a single disk 5big Storage Server.
In the scenario where Disk 0 fails some time after a disk is added to
a single disk 5big Storage Server, the front LED will blink continu-
ously since it cannot boot from the first drive with an operating sys-
tem. The administrator may feel a bit inconvenienced by having to
connect a monitor, keyboard, and mouse to the 5big Storage Server
in order to choose Disk 1 as the boot disk.
To keep the 5big Storage Server boot order, type or copy and paste
the following commands into Command Prompt before mirroring
the system disk (Go to Start>Command Prompt or Start>Run
and type cmd.):
bcdedit /set {current} osdevice boot
bcdedit /set {current} device boot
bcdedit /set {bootmgr} device boot
bcdedit /set {memdiag} device boot

Mirror.
