About the starting menu used for creating a chapter index
The starting menu is the basis from which the chapter index menus are created. You can use one of the submenu
templates in the Library panel, or you can create the starting menu in Adobe Encore DVD or Photoshop. For the
chapter indexes to be created properly, at least one button on the starting menu must be linked to a timeline or slide
show chapter, and the starting menu should have the appropriate button types assigned. You can assign the following
button types from the Type pop-up menu on the Properties panel:

Using Photoshop to create menus

Using Photoshop to create Adobe Encore DVD menus
Adobe Encore DVD is designed to work directly with Adobe Photoshop to build and edit menus and buttons. You
can create entire menus or elements for menus (such as buttons and backgrounds) in Adobe Photoshop and import
them directly into Adobe Encore DVD. You can also edit Adobe Encore DVD menus at any time in Photoshop, and
have the changes updated immediately.
Menus, even those created in Adobe Encore DVD, use the Photoshop PSD file format. All layers and layer sets you
create in Photoshop remain intact when you import them into a project. If you follow the layer-naming convention,
Adobe Encore DVD automatically recognizes button sets, button subpictures, replacement layers, and video thumb-
nails. Once imported, you can edit or modify the menu as you would any menu created in Adobe Encore DVD, or
jump back into Photoshop to fine tune it using Photoshop's extensive design tools.
Visit Resource Center on the Adobe website to view a tutorial about editing menus in Adobe Photoshop CS2.
When creating menus in Adobe Photoshop, keep these considerations in mind:
Set the size of your background images and menus to match the frame dimensions of your TV standard
Menu size
(NTSC or PAL). Photoshop includes preset image sizes for DV projects. Whether creating a menu using the
Photoshop CS non-square pixel option or the square-pixel preset sizes provided by Photoshop 7, Adobe Encore DVD
correctly interprets the menu size and compensates automatically for the change in pixel dimensions if necessary.
