The Transparent Mode feature provided by D-Link firewalls aims at
simplifying the deployment of firewall appliances into the existing network
topology, to strengthen security. It helps to ease the administration work in
a way that there is no need to reconfigure all the settings for the nodes
within the current network, when a firewall is introduced into the
communication flow.
This chapter gives an overview of the transparent mode feature and
introduces how transparent mode is implemented in D-Link firewalls in
detail. Configuration examples of simple network layouts and more
complicated real-life scenarios can be found at the end of this chapter.

Overview
Transparency refers to the visibility of the firewall to hosts on both sides of
a firewall. A firewall is considered transparent to users if they do not notice
the firewall in the packet flow. When adding a transparent firewall into a
preexisting network structure, we achieve the following advantages for
network administrators:
No reconfiguration required – clients can keep the same network
configuration after the firewall has been installed.
No obstacle added – the deployment of the firewall should be invisible
to the internal users, as they can still obtain the allowed services.
