NMS provides a list of the original and new link-level addresses for all devices on the affected
tree. NMS identifies any device whose poll list status was changed (from active to skipped) in the
mode changing process.
When the conversion is complete, refer to the list of original and new link-level addresses provided
by NMS and do the following:

Protocol Mode Conversion from a Front Panel

6800-A2-GB20-20
1. Check the status of each device on the diagnostic tree to ensure diagnostic
communications.
2. Determine if devices for which poll list status was changed should be added to their
upstream device's poll list.
3. Update any user or system routines that have embedded link-level addresses in them. In the
device profile, the Change Protocol Mode (chpm) command automatically converts the
link-level address of the control modem and every device on the diagnostic tree. However,
the command does not change the link-level addresses embedded in routines to reflect the
new addresses. To avoid problems, use mnemonic device names when specifying
individual devices within routines.
4. Update the trouble ticket database records, if you wish, to reflect address differences. In
particular, the trouble ticket and alert databases contain records that are keyed to a device's
previous mode address. New trouble tickets and alerts are keyed against the device's new
address. Automatic Trouble Report (ATR) records that are in process and tracked to the old
device address, however, remain keyed to the original address. The historical database also
reflects the old address.
Although you can change the protocol mode from the front panel of
a device, it is not recommended. When you change protocol mode
from the front panel, an immediate address conversion occurs at the
control modem. However, the address conversion is not
automatically reflected in the 6800 Series NMS. The recommended
way to change the protocol mode of a diagnostic tree is by
executing the Change Protocol Mode command (chpm) in the
6800 Series NMS.
