COMSPHERE 6800 Series Network Management System
The DATAPHONE II diagnostic network is composed of all DATAPHONE II devices or of a
combination of DATAPHONE II, 3400/4400 Series devices, and 3600 Series DSUs. This type of
network operates in a DATAPHONE II diagnostic protocol mode and each device operating in this
mode must be identified by an addressing scheme that resembles the DATAPHONE II addressing
scheme.
The Advanced diagnostic network is composed of only COMSPHERE devices. This type of
network operates in the ADp protocol mode, and each device operating in this mode must be
identified by the Advanced protocol mode addressing scheme.
These networks are described in the following sections. If you migrate from one type of diagnostic
network to another, you must change the diagnostic protocol mode in which you network devices
operates, as described later in this chapter.

DATAPHONE II Diagnostic Network

The DATAPHONE II diagnostic network contains DATAPHONE II devices or COMSPHERE
devices. In this network, all COMSPHERE devices must conform to the restrictions of the
DATAPHONE II network topology when they are replacing point-to-point and multipoint circuits.
The 6800 Series NMS identifies a modem and its position in the diagnostic tree by the device's
link-level address using the following guidelines:
