Certain conditions may prevent the execution of the Change Protocol Mode (chpm) command; or
may permit the execution of the command but lead to the loss of data or routines. Therefore, you
should take the following steps to prepare for conversion:

Changing from DATAPHONE II Mode to ADp Mode

To change from DATAPHONE II mode to ADp mode, execute the Change Protocol Mode (chpm)
command from the NMS System Management window to the control modem at the head of the
tree. This modem is the only one to which you may issue this command. The NMS issues a
subnetwork abort to the control modem using the current mode address of that device. Then, NMS
determines the new link-level address of the control modem. Therefore, if the original link-level
address had been:
1-10
The following paragraph applies to installed networks only. Although
it is possible to change the protocol mode from the front panel of a
device, you should avoid doing so. When you change protocol mode
from the front panel, an immediate address conversion occurs at the
control modem. However, the address conversion is not
automatically reflected in the 6800 Series NMS. The recommended
way to change the protocol mode of a diagnostic tree is by
executing the Change Protocol Mode (chpm) command in the 6800
Series NMS.
1. Review the Alternate mode address field in the device profile for every device on the
diagnostic tree. If you are moving to ADp mode (from DATAPHONE II mode), be sure
that long-form addresses appear in this field.
2. If you are moving to DATAPHONE II mode (from ADp mode), be sure that short-form
addresses are supplied in the Alternate mode address field and be sure that no device has
a network address value greater than 80. For more information on device addressing, refer
to Appendix D of the COMSPHERE 6800 Series Network Management System
User's/System Administrator's Guide.
3. To change information in the Alternate mode address field, execute the Edit Device
Profile (eddp) command. The COMSPHERE 6800 Series Network Management System
Core Command Reference Manual explains these commands in detail.
4. Verify that all devices on the diagnostic tree have complete, correct poll lists.
5. Verify that there are no active alerts on the network.
6. Verify that no devices are in test mode. If any devices are in test mode, abort the test or
wait until its completion before beginning the protocol conversion process.
