1074 CD-ROM Drive Assembly
Type A versus Type B Drives
A 'Type
A"
CD-ROM drive is the originai type installed in the 7785
Service Bay System
.
A "Type
B"
CD-ROM drive is the replacement
version of this unit. lt can be distinguished from the Type A drive by
the presence of a small audio jack and a volume control on its front
panel. These controls are not present in the Type A
drive.
Early 7785 systems in the field might stili be equipped with Type A
CD-ROM drives
or,
if the system's drives have been serviced
,
a mix
of Type A and Type
B.
Ali new systems are equipped with Type B
drives.
In every case
,
a fai led CD-ROM drive (Type A or Type B) must be
replaced by a Type B unit.
The procedures for removal and installation of Type A and Type B
drives differ substantially. See below for
details.
Removal (Type A)
• Unplug the ac power cord from the electrical outlet.
• Remove the left cover (1 005).
• Remove an d discard the front bezel (1 035) from the detective
drive unit. A new bezel is provided with the replacement Type B
drive kit.
• Remove and discard the rear dust cover of the
drive.

and discard the foam materia!
inside.
• Disconnect the ground wire, the power
connector,
and the SCSI
ribbon cable from the back of the drive.
• Remove the drive by pressing the spring clip on the side of the
cage,
then pushing from the back of the drive to slide it out the
front.
• Record the SCSI ID switch settings. The replacement drive must
have the same SCSI ID (logical address) as the unit removed
.
