Hydrostatic Drive Transmission Removal
Drive System: Service and Repairs
4. Connect the battery by installing the positive cable first, then the negative
cable to the battery.
1. Park the machine on a level surface and disengage the PTO. Stop the
engine, wait for all moving parts to stop and remove the key. Engage the
parking brake.
2. Disconnect the battery by removing the negative cable first, then the positive
cable from the battery.
3. Using an appropriate lifting device, raise the rear of the machine and support.
Note: Do not raise and support on the hydro plate.
4. Remove the deck belt.
5. Using a ½ inch breaker bar, insert into the most accessible square hole of
the idler arm.

6. Turn the breaker bar to release belt tension. Remove the drive belt from
the idler pulley.
7. Remove the wheel from the side being serviced.
8. Release the parking brake.
9. ZT 5400 only, remove the 2 brake return springs connecting the brake rod to
the hydro plate.
10. Remove the 8 (3/8 inch) (4 per side) locks nuts and bolts securing the hydro
plate to the chassis. Remove the hydro plate.
11. Remove the locking cotter pin securing the brake rod to the hydrostatic
transaxle. Remove the break rod from the hydrostatic transaxle.
12. Remove the 5/16 inch nut and shoulder bolt securing motion control link
to the hydrostatic transaxle.
13. Remove the cartridge filter and drain the hydrostatic transaxle being removed.
14. Remove and plug the spring clamps securing the reservoir hose to the
hydrostatic transaxle.
