8.Final Drive UXV 500i/700i
Gear Tooth Contact
After the proper shims have been selected the gear tooth contact must be checked.
Remove the differential and pinion gear. Clean the differential ring gear and pinion gear.
Apply machinists dye to several teeth of the pinion gear. Install the pinion gear and
differential into the case. Temporarily assemble the differential.
Turn the differential ring gear back and forth so the dye coated gear teeth contact the ring
gear.
The dye should show that the contact area of the gear teeth is centered on the teeth. If the
contact is to high or low on the teeth the differential shims must be changed so that the
tooth contact is correct while maintaining the correct backlash.
