DIAGNOSIS AND TESTING

REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION
Safeguards
1 .
NOTE: When the battery ( 1 0653) has been
disconnected or reconnected, some abnormal
drive symptoms may occur while the powertrain
control module (PCM)( 1 2A650) relearns its
adaptive strategy. The vehicle may need to be
driven 1 6 km ( 10 miles) or more to relearn· the
strategy. Refer to Section 1 4-Q 1 .
Always disconnect battery ground cable ( 1430 1 )
before servicing or replacing electronic engine
controls.

Follow diagnostic procedures as described in the
Powertrain Control / Emissions Diagnosis
Manual 2 •
3.
Disconnect electronic engine controls from wire
harness before measuring for
continuity-resistance or energizing by using a
1 2-volt source.
4.
Never measure voltage or resistance directly at
the powertrain control module.
Powertrain Control Module (PCM)
Removal
1 .
Disconnect battery ground cable ( 1 430 1 ). Refer
to Section 14-Q 1 .
2.
Remove RH cowl side trim panel (02344) to
expose powertrain control module
(PCM)( 1 2A650).
3.
Loosen engine control sensor wiring to PCM
connector retainer bolt.
4.
Remove engine control sensor wiring connector
from PCM.
5.
Remove PCM from powertrain control module
bracket (PCM bracket)( 1 2A659) by pulling
powertrain control module downward.

Follow removal procedure in reverse order.
2.
lighten engine control sensor wiring connector
retainer bolt to 2.7-3.7 N-m (24-32 1b-in).

Throttle Position (TP) Sensor
Removal
1 .
Disconnect battery ground cable ( 1 430 1). Refer
to Section 1 4-Q 1 .
2.
Disconnect fuel charging wiring (9D930) from
throttle position sensor (TP sensor)(98989).
3.
Remove two throttle position sensor retaining
screws.
4.
Remove throttle position sensor.
Installation
1 .
Follow removal procedure in reverse order.
2.
lighten retaining screws to 2.8-3.8 N·m (25-33
lb-in).
