2.1.2 Carriage Operation

Because photo-sensor elements are aligned and have a one-to-one correspondence with a horizontal row
of pixels, no mechanical operation is required for the main scan (one horizontal reading of the original
film). To read more than a single line, however, vertical movement (sub-scanning) is also necessary. This
requires mechanical movement of the scanner head. h other words, scanning is performed by reading one
line at a time, moving in the vertical direction. The operation is illustrated in Figure 2-6.

2.1.2.1 Film Carrier Preview Scanning

The preview motor on the carrier holder unit of the engine drives the film carrier back and forward via
reduction gear. Refer to Figure 2-7.
At the Preview scanning mode, six or four image frames (due to the type of the film carrier) are scanned
at once.
This scanner has an auto-loading function of the film carrier. The status of the carrier and scanning
position where image frame is read are detected by the photo sensor for preview scanning.
