SONET transmission rates
The following transmission rates are commonly used with SONET:

OC-3c/STM-1: 155.52 Mb/s (and SDH/STM-1)
•
OC-12c/STM-4: 622.08 Mb/s (and SDH/STM-4)
The SONET specification defines optical both as:
•
Single-mode fiber (SMF)
•
Multimode fiber (MMF)

Note: The estimated maximum transmission distance for OC-3c SMF is
20 kilometers (km); for OC-3c MMF is 2 km; for OC-12c SMF is 15 km;
for OC-12c MMF is 500 m.
