Rear Axle Lubricant

It is not necessary to regularly
check the fluid unless you suspect
there is a leak in the system or you
hear an unusual noise.
Fluid loss in this system could
indicate a problem. Have the
system inspected.
Axle assemblies are filled by
volume of fluid rather than filled to
reach a certain level. Readings will
vary depending on how long the
vehicle has been stationary.
Remember that the rear axle
assembly must be supported to
get a true reading.
See the "Recommended Fluids and
Lubricants" chart later in this
section to determine what kind of
fluid to use.
To check the fluid level:
1. Park the vehicle on a level
surface and apply the parking
brake.
2. Turn off the engine.
3. Check the level of the
lubricant by removing the
plug.
The proper level is 1 mm to
19 mm below the bottom of
the filler plug hole.
Add only enough fluid to bring the
fluid up to the proper level.
