Checking the entire RIP Station 5000 system

Checking the entire RIP Station 5000 system
This phase of troubleshooting deals with problems with the entire system, once the
RIP Station 5000 functions as a stand-alone unit.

Checking the printer interface

After the RIP Station 5000 starts up successfully as a stand-alone unit, turn off the
RIP Station 5000 and connect the printer interface cable. You should make sure the
RIP Station 5000 is working properly with the printer before you connect it to the
network. See "Connecting to the printer" on page 3-3.
Once you have connected the RIP Station 5000 to the printer you should print the Test
Page to make sure that the interface between the printer and the RIP Station 5000 is
working properly. See "Printing the RIP Station 5000 Test Page" on page 3-5.
If the Test Page does not print at all or has a low-quality image, you may have a faulty
motherboard or printer interface cable, or the printer interface kit connections are bad,
or the printer may not be functioning properly. In these cases, you should first check
RIP Station 5000 connections and then run theRIP Station 5000 Board diagnostics (see
"Board diagnostics" on page 5-17) to locate the problem.

Checking network connections

After the RIP Station 5000 is connected to networked computers, printing problems
may arise if the network hardware or software is not set up properly or doesn't match
network settings on the RIP Station 5000. Problems may also arise when printing from a
specific application or printing a particular file.
Most of these problems show up as printing problems, and do not necessarily indicate a
RIP Station 5000 malfunction. The customer's network administrator can eliminate
many printing problems without requiring you to make a service call. The network
administrator deals with:
• Print device error conditions.
• Network connection problems that result in the RIP Station 5000 not appearing in
printer list on the customer's workstation.
Note: If the RIP Station 5000 does not appear in the list of printers on the network,
there may be another device on the network with the same Ethernet hardware address.
Check the Ethernet address in the diagnostic report Info menu (see "Viewing the
diagnostic report" on page 5-18). If the Ethernet address in this menu is the same as
another device on the network, the RIP Station 5000 may not appear in the list of
printers.
