Note the following
items
when stopping the
engine.
1.
Place
the tran
sm ission
in
neutral,
then allow
the engine
to
idle for five minutes before
stopping the
engine.
2. Momentaril y raise
engine speed 10
blowout any resi-
due in the
cylinders. then pullthe
engine stop knob or
le-
ver.
CAUTION
Do
not Slop
the
engine
using
the
decompres-
sion
lever:
Doing
so
may
leave sufficientfuel
in
the cy
linders
to
damage
the engine when
started.

Close the scacock. If ambient temperature is below
freezing whi
le
the engine
is
not
running,
drain water in
coo
ling system

fter
engine has coo
led.

STOP PING
To safe
ly
stop a diesel engine
when thc
normal stopping
controls
are
inoperative
or ineffective,
block
the engine's
air
intake.
A
flat plate is desirable if it will
adequately
cover the opening.
A
rag may also be used, but do not
al-
low
the
rag to
enter
the
engine.

the
boat
was used
in salt or polluted
water,
flush
the
coo ling system with freshwater
as described
in this chap

ter.
This will min
imize corrosion
and buildup of deposi

battery from the boat
