l. If using a puller to remove a bearing on a shaft , care
mus t be taken so that shaft damage doe s not occu r. Al -
ways place a piece of metal between the end of the shaft
and the pulle r screw. In addition. place the puller arms
next to the inner beari ng race. See Figure SO.

If
using a hammer to remo ve a bearing on a shaft. do
not strike the hamme r dire ctly against the shaft. Instead.
use a brass or alum inum
rod between
the hammer and
shaft (Figur e 51). In add ition. support both bea ring races
with wooden block s as sho
w
n in f igu re 51.
3. The most ideal method of bearing removal is with a hy-
draulic press. However, certa in procedures must be fol-
lowed or damage may occur to the bearing , shaft or
bearing housing. Note the following if using a press:
a. Always support the inner and oute r bearing races
with a suitable size wood or aluminum ring (Figure
52). Ifon ly the outer race is supported. pressure ap-
plied aga inst the bearings and/or the inner race will
damage them.
b. Always make sure the press ram (Figu re 52) aligns
with the cent er of the shaft . If the ram is not cen-
tered , it may damage the bearing and/or sha ft.
c. The mom ent the shaft is free of the bearing, it will
drop to the floor. Secure the shaft to prevent it from
falling.
Bearing Installation
1. When installing a bearing in a housing. pressure must
be applied to the outer bearing race (Figu re 53 ). When in-
stalling a bearing on a shaft. pressure must be applied to
the inner bearing race (Figu re 54 ).
2. When installing a bearing as described in Step 1. some
type ofdriver wi ll be required. Never strike the beari ng di-
rectly with a hammer or the beari ng wi ll be damaged . A
piece of pipe or a socket with an outer d iameter that
matches the bearing race will be requ ired. Figure SS
shows the correct way to use a socket and hamm er when
installing a bearing.
