Weld bead formation
The formation of weld bead depends on the
welding speed and arc conditions.
Ideal weld:
•
The bead will lay smoothly over the
work without ragged edges
•
The base metal puddle will be as deep as
the bead that rises above it.
•
The welding operation will make a
crackling sound.
Faster weld speed:
•
The bead will be high and irregular
(fig 2O).
•
The arc will be difficult to maintain.
Slower weld speed:
•
The arc will burn through light metals
•
The bead will undercut the work.
•
The bead will be flat and porous
(fig 2N).
