You should select a media type that is supported for the format you've selected.
This media type should be:
• Supported by the desired DVD format (see table below)
• Compatible with your DVD player
• Compatible with your DVD writer – it is recommended to use a type and brand
of recordable media that is documented to work well with your DVD writer.
Check the websites of your drive manufacturer and media manufacturers.
Use rewritable media (DVD-RW, DVD+RW) if you are experimenting or making test
discs – they are reusable. Use recordable (DVD-R, DVD+R) media for low cost;
though all DVD media prices have come down substantially. Rewritable media are
more flexible in their applications – they are the media of choice for projects
requiring appending to or editing of previously created discs.
The table below outlines how various authoring operations are supported on each
DVD format – namely, editing operations performed after the disc has been
originally burned. The DVD-VR and DVD+VR formats were designed with this in
mind, but for most applications you will select DVD-Video or DVD-Video fast re-
editable as the output format for your DVD project. Of these two formats, DVD-
Video fast re-editable should be selected if significant editing of the title(s) on the
disc will be needed (also, select this when true one-pass ("on the fly") Direct to
disc is desired!), since it can perform edit operations by transferring just a single
title to the hard drive (HDD) instead of the entire contents of the DVD to be edited,
as occurs with DVD-Video. When using rewriteable media (DVD-RW, DVD+RW),
the DVD-Video fast re-editable format allows edited/appended titles to be burned
out to the same media if enough contiguous space exists, whereas with the DVD-
Video format the entire modified DVD project must be burned again. In either
case, if a recordable media (DVD-R, DVD+R) is being edited, a new disc is required
when burning the edited titles/project.
