Planning Your DVD Project
Organizing
Space on Your
DVD
The process of planning the layout and content of your DVD, then capturing,
editing, and formatting the audio and video media, is called authoring.
This chapter briefly highlights video format and compression considerations, which
can affect the length of your video; for example, a lower compression level results
in a larger video file.
Planning the length of the video material for your DVD enables you to select the
best video capture and output parameters, to maximize visual quality and avoid
any extra rendering time and quality loss during compression.
Capture
If you use a standard single-layer recordable DVD, the media holds a bit less than
4.7 GB of data. You should therefore plan for a video size of approximately 4.4 GB.
There are several types of recordable DVD media (DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R and
DVD+RW). Only some consumer DVD players support them all. Select a media
type compatible with both your DVD writer and DVD player. See "Selecting the
DVD Format and Media Type" on page 6-1.
