The ALT key is used in Non-Text Mode to allow the entry of the Text symbols
on the front of the keys. Note: The spacebar remains operational ill ALT Mode.
The characters that are entered in Non-Text ALT Mode are shown in Figure 4-12.
To enter any of these characters, (1) press and hold the ALT key and (2) press
the desired key.
TEXT ON/OFF Key
Pressing the TEXT ON/OFF key when the keyboard is in Non-Text Downshift
Mode causes the keyboard to shift into Text Downshift Mode (TEXT shift message
is displayed in the Operator Information Area); pressing the TEXT ON/OFF key
when the keyboard is in Non-Text Upshift Mode causes the keyboard to shift into
Text Upshift Mode [TEXT shift message and {} (upshift) symbol are displayed
in the Operator Information Area]. The keyboard is returned to Non-Text Mode
by pressing the TEXT ON/OFF key again.
The Shift ( {} ) and Lock (
&J )
keys operate the same in Non-Text Mode and
Text Mode. To place the keyboard in Text Upshift Mode, (1) press and hold either
of the Shift keys or (2) press the Lock key. When the keyboard is locked in Text
Upshift Mode, press either Shift key when you are ready to return the keyboard to
APL Downshift Mode.
Text Downshift Mode causes:
o
The corresponding lowercase alphabet letter to be displayed when an Alphabet
key is pressed.
o
The corresponding numeric digit to be displayed when a Numeric key is pressed.

The symbol on the lower center or the lower-right portion (if present) of the
key top to be displayed when a symbol key is pressed (see Figure 4-12).
Text Upshift Mode causes:
o
The corresponding uppercase alphabet letter to be displayed when an Alphabet
key is pressed.
o
The symbol on the upper-center or the upper-right portion (if present) of the
key top to be displayed when a symbol key is pressed (see Figure 4-12).
The AL T key is used in Text Mode to allow the entry of symbols located on the
front of the Alphabet, Numeric, Symbol, Tab (
~I
),
Backtab (
I~
),
and New Line (
W )
keys.
Note: The spacebar remains operational in ALT Mode. The characters that are

characters, (1) place the keyboard in Text Mode, (2) press and hold the ALT key,
and (3) press the desired key.
The Numeric Lock feature can be installed on the Typewriter/Text keyboard.
DUP and FIELD MARK Keys
The DUP and FIELD MARK functions on the Typewriter keyboard can be
activated when the keyboard is in Downshift or Upshift Mode. On the
Typewriter/Text keyboard, however, DUP and FIELD MARK can be activated
only in Non-Text Upshift Mode and Text Upshift Mode.
