Shifts and Modes
The shifts and modes messages displayed in the Operator Information Area,
tell you what shift and mode your keyboard is using at the time.
NUM -
Numeric
This message is used when your display station has the Numeric Lock feature
(described in Chapter
4)
installed.
NUM
appears when the cursor is located in a
numeric field and your display station is in Numeric Mode. The only keys that
are valid in Numeric Mode are 0 through 9, period (.), minus (-), and DUP. To
override the numeric control,
use~

keyboards only). Refer to the keyboard section, also.
ALPHA - Alpha
This message is used when your display station is in Alpha Mode. The Alpha
key (
.u. ),
present on Data Entry Keyboards only, is nonlocking (must be held
down to stay in Alpha Mode).
APL -APL
This message is used when your display station (1) has the APL/Text feature
(described in Chapter 4) installed and (2) is equipped with a Typewriter/APL
keyboard. APL appears when you place the keyboard in APL Mode by
pressing the APL ON/OFF key while pressing and holding the ALT key; the
APL message disappears when you place the keyboard in Non-APL Mode
(normal) by pressing the APL ON/OFF key a second time while pressing and
holding the ALT key. It also disappears under certain conditions, when you
have selected a Programmed Symbol set.
TEXT
-TEXT
This message is used when your display station (1) has the APL/Text feature
(described in Chapter 4) installed and (2) is equipped with a Typewriter/Text
keyboard. TEXT appears when you place the keyboard in Text Mode by
pressing the TEXT ON/OFF key; the TEXT message disappears when you
place the keyboard in Non-Text Mode (normal) by pressing the TEXT ON/
OFF key a second time. It also disappears (under certain conditions) when
you have selected a Programmed Symbol set.
i} - UP
The i} symbol appears when (1) you place your keyboard in the upshift
condition or (2) the cursor is located in an upshift ("numeric") field when you
are using a Data Entry keyboard that does not have the Numeric Lock feature.

Insert
The

symbol appears when you place your display station in Insert Mode by
pressing the

key. (For a description of Insert Mode, refer to the

key
descriptions in the keyboard sections.) The
A
symbol turns off when you take
your display station out of Insert Mode.
Highlighting
The highlighting attribute messages that appear in the Operator Information
Area, if your display station has the extended highlighting feature installed, are
as follows:
