Section 12: Installing the Engine (Gas Option)

Parts Needed
• Fuselage
• Plywood motor mount
• Mounting hardware (optional) (four 4mm x 25mm flat head
screws, four 4mm x 30mm machine screws, four 4mm nuts,
four 4mm washers)
• Blind nuts
• Engine
Note: Installation of the Zenoah G-23 Gasoline engine is not
difficult, however, there are two things that are impor-
tant to keep in mind. First, provision for a "kill" or
"shut-off" switch is a requirement for safety reasons.
Refer to the Zenoah Engine Operating Instructions for
the details on how to construct a "shut-off" or "kill"
switch. Second, the G-23 engine's weight will require
weight being added to the tail of the aircraft. Otherwise
the aircraft will be very nose heavy and unsafe to fly.
Be sure to read Section 20, Balancing the Aircraft, to
make sure the aircraft is balanced before any attempt
to fly.
Step 1. We will use a mixture of 12-minute epoxy and rubbing
alcohol to seal the wood firewall area and the 1/4" hardwood
motor mount. Mix up approximately 1 oz. of 12-minute epoxy
combined with 1/2 ounce of rubbing alcohol (the alcohol thins
the epoxy, making it easier to apply). Mix thoroughly and brush
it on the entire firewall area and hardwood motor mount to seal
them from fuel. Allow the epoxy to cure completely. CAUTION:
Do not get epoxy into any of the pre-drilled holes.

Tools and Adhesives Needed
• Phillips screwdriver
• Allen wrench
• ball driver
• 12-minute epoxy
• 30-minute epoxy
• Rubbing alcohol
• Paper towels
• Kill switch and hardware (required but not included in kit)
Step 2. After the epoxy has dried, proceed with mounting the
Zenoah G-23. First, locate the four 4mm x 25mm flat head
machine screws and the four blind nuts. A template of the hard-
wood motor mount is shown below. Note where the flat head
screws and machine screws go. To mount the blind nuts inside
the fuselage behind the firewall, use a piece of music wire to
guide the blind nut into position, then use the screw to tighten
the blind nut into the plywood temporarily (refer to the proce-
dure described in Section 11, Step 4).
