    Your new Model 8690 endpoint provides access to several features, each of which is described in this guide. The Inter-Tel multi-protocol endpoints support two different modes of network protocols, and can operate in either Inter-Tel Protocol (ITP) mode or Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) mode. The operating mode determines which fea- tures and options are enabled on the endpoint.

Using voice mail, you and other callers can send and receive recorded messages from any supported endpoint on the system. To use voice mail features, each user (or sub- scriber) is assigned a mailbox, which usually corresponds to the extension number assigned to your endpoint.

Firmware Upgrades Your endpoint comes pre-installed with Inter-Tel-provided firmware that allows it to communicate with the telephone system. Firmware is software that is embedded in a hardware device (e.g., your endpoint) that allows it to operate. Endpoints may require updates when a new version of software or firmware is available.
