WARNING
Skiers must wear an approved PFD.
It is advised that you become familiar with water
skiing safety and hand signals as you will most
likely, on occasion, fi nd yourself in the vicinity of or
engaging in water skiing activity.
•
Anyone who water skis must know how to swim.
•
Never drive the boat directly behind a water
skier. At 22 knots (25 m.p.h.), it takes only 5
seconds to overtake a fallen skier who was 60
meters (200 feet) in front.
•
Keep a downed skier in sight and on the
operator's side of the boat when approaching the
skier. Never back up to anyone in the water.
•
Learn the signals to communicate with a skier.
The skier is to control the boat through hand
signals (Fig. 1.10.1).
Turn – Arm raised, circle with index finger
extended.
Skier in Water – Extend one ski vertically out
of water.
Back to Dock – Pat top of head.

Cut Motor – Draw fi nger across throat.
Slow Down – Thumb pointed down or palm
down, move hand up and down.
Faster – Thumb pointed up or palm up, move
hand up and down.
OK – Raise arm and form a circle with thumb
and index fi nger.
Stop – Raise arm with palm vertical and facing
forward.
Turn Right – Extend arm out from body to the
right.
Turn Left – Extend arm out from body to the
left.
OK After a Fall – Clasp hands together
overhead.

If the skier suddenly releases the tow rope, it
can backlash into cockpit. Spotters who are
watching the skier must be aware of this fact
and be prepared to defl ect the rope by hand to
avoid injury.

Recognize and respect diving fl ags (Fig. 1.10.2).
Keep at least 30 meters (100 feet) away.
