Raw Water Circuit
Oose the through-hull sea cock. Remove the raw water intake hose from the sea cock. Place the end of
this hose into a 5-gallon bucket of clean fresh water. Before starting the engine, check the zinc anode found
in the primary heat exchanger on the engine and clean or replace it as required. aean the raw water strainer,
if one is installed, in the inside of the hull.
Start the engine and allow the raw water pump to draw fresh water through the system. When the bucket
is empty, stop the engine and refill the bucket with an antifreeze solution slightly stronger than needed for
winter freeze protection in your area.
Start the engine and allow all of this mixture to
be drawn through the raw water system. Once the bucket
is empty, stop the engine. This antifreeze mixture should protect the raw water circuit from freezing during
the winter lay-up, as well as prOviding corrosion protection.
Remove the impeller from your raw water pump (some antifreeze mixture will accompany it, so catch it in a
bucket). Examine the impeller. Acquire a replacement,·if needed, and a cover gasket. Do not replace the
impeller (into the pump) until recommiSSioning, but replace the cover and gasket. See the "Cylinder
Lubrication
ll
section below.
Intake Manifold and Througf1..Hull Exhaust
The flame arrester on the carburetor is removed to fog the engine. Do not reinstall it. Place a cloth
sprayed with fogging oil into the intake of the carburetor. Oose off the exhaust outlet of the transom in
the same manner. Be sure to remove both cloths and reinstall the flame arrester prior to start-up.
Starter
Motor
Lubrication and cleaning of the starter drive pinion is advisable, if access to the starter permits its easy
removal. Make sure the battery connections are shut off before attempting to remove the starter. Take care
in proper1y replacing any electrical connections removed from the starter.
Cylinder Lubrication
Fogging the engine should
be
done as the last of the antifreeze mixture is drawn into the raw water circuit.
Remove the air intake screen (the air filter) and spray Marvel Mystery Oil or another commercially available
fogging oil into the carburetor while the engine is running. Spray enough oil to stall the engine. This will
coat the walls of the cylinders, pistons, and valve surfaces with this protective oil. Remove the spark plugs
and spray a small amount of this oil into each spark plug hole and tum the engine over two or three complete
revolutions by hand. Reinstall, but do not tighten, the spark plugs, as these will need to be cleaned and
gapped prior to recommissioning. Oose off the carburetor's air filter with an oily rag.
Spares
Lay-up time provides a good opportunity to inspect the equipment to see if external items such as drive
belts or coolant hoses need replacement. Check your basic spares kit and order items not on hand, or
replace those items used during the lay-up, such as filters and zinc anodes. Refer to the IISPARE PARTS
II
section of this manual.
