BUYERS LABORATORY TEST REPORT
TEST RESULTS AND OBSERVATIONS
Transmitting documents: Good. The unit supports multi-
access and, thus, is programmed to transmit documents
from memory. Multi-access allows a document to be
scanned into memory while another document is being
transmitted from memory or received. The unit dials the
destination and begins transmitting while pages are still
being scanned to memory, which along with its multi-
access capabilities helps to expedite communication (in
contrast, some devices do not begin transmission until
all pages of a document have been scanned to memory).
When transmitting documents, the user can select from
up to 55 one-touch keys, 145 speed-dial locations and
broadcasting to up to 32 groups. The destination can be
entered before inserting the document into the feeder,
which would allow, for example, the user to refer to a
fax number on a cover page.
Memory capacity: The test unit was equipped with 16
MB of fax memory (8 MB of which is standard). Be-
cause of the unit's large standard memory, memory ca-
pacity was not tested; however Muratec claims a capac-
ity of 1,330 pages based on a 6% original for 16 MB.
PERFORMANCE OF TESTED SPECIAL FEATURES

Automatic Document Feeder (ADF)

Satisfactory. The document feeder will
automatically feed up to 50 sheets ranging
in size from 5-1/2" x 8-1/2" to 8-1/2" x 14".
Acceptable paper weights, 13 to 24 lbs.
Controls/indicators on unit: None.

Bypass Tray

Satisfactory. The standard "non-intelli-
gent" bypass tray holds 50 sheets of 13- to
24-lb. bond and has double-geared adjust-
able side guides that move in sync to ac-
commodate sheets ranging in size from
5-1/2" x 8-1/2" to 8-1/2" x 14". The user
must enter the paper size for this tray to
commence a copy job.

Muratec MFX-1200 Multifunctional
Transmitting from memory after a failed communication:
Good. When the MFX-1200 was subjected to excessive
line noise during the tests, it was found that the destina-
tion was automatically redialed after the communica-
tion was terminated (it will automatically be redialed
up to two times at one-minute intervals, which is user-
adjustable from two to 15 redials and one- to five-minute
intervals), and when a connection was made after
redialing, the affected page and the remaining pages were
transmitted. When the error report was printed, it cor-
rectly indicated the number of pages successfully trans-
mitted.
Transmitting from memory when the size of the file ex-
ceeds memory capacity: Because the size of the unit's
memory makes it unlikely that a document will exceed
memory capacity, BLI did not perform this test.
Legal-to-letter reduction: During testing, a legal-size
(8-1/2" x 14") document that was transmitted to the
MFX-1200 with letter-size (8-1/2" x 11") paper loaded
was automatically reduced. The reduction took place
both vertically (Y axis) and horizontally (X axis).
