An optical device that reads printed material and converts it to a computer screen image.
serial interface
An interface that communicates information one bit at a time.
serial printer
A printer with a serial interface.
software
Programs that run on a computer, such as operating systems, word processors, and
spreadsheets.
super video graphics array (SVGA)
A color bit-mapped graphics technology that supports a resolution of up to 1600 by 1200
pixels with up to 16 million colors displayed simultaneously.
system board
The main printed circuit board inside the system unit into which other boards and major
chip components, such as the system microprocessor, are connected.

TFT
Thin Film Transistor. A type of LCD color screen that supports 256 colors and provides
exceptional screen display.

VGA
Video Graphics Array. Graphics technology that supports up to 256 K colors and a graphics
resolution of 640 by 480 pixels.
volatile memory
Storage media that loses its data when system power is turned off. Standard memory and
memory that you add to a computer are volatile memory. See nonvolatile memory.
W
warm boot
Process of resetting the computer without turning off the power through keyboard input
(pressing Ctrl , Alt , and Del keys simultaneously). A warm boot can also be done through the
Windows operating system (typically, select Start , click Shutdown , click Restart , click
OK ). The system returns to an initial or arbitrarily selected condition.

To record or store information to a storage device.
