STEAMVENTS
Beforea steamsystemwill operateproperly, s uitablesteamventsmustbe
installedin eachradiatoras wellas the returnmain.Somesystemsrequire
steamtrapsin thereturnlineat theradiation unit.
The"Hartfordloop"is a pipingarrangement whichmustbeincluded(Fig.8)
for proper operation ofthesteamsystem.
BOILERS WITH TANKLESSCOILSONLY FlowRegulatorand Water
Tempering Valve
If youhavea Tankless Coilfordomestic hotwater, thesetwo partscanbe
used.Thiswill provide youinstantaneous h otwaterthat is neither
scaldinghotnormerelytepid.The FlowRegulator i s placedin thecoldwater
line to thecoil. It assuresa steadyflow of watersothat the coilcanproperly
heatit. It prevents"spurts" of "half-heated" water.Thisisimportant wherethe
waterpressureis excessively highor variable.TheWaterTempering Valve
is a tee whichis connected at a junctionbetween the hotwaterlinefrom the
coiland a coldwaterbranchfromthesupplyline.It mixeshotandcoldwater
as required to furnisha tempered supplyof waterto the house. The water
will be just the righttemperature for youruse. This is important o n a steam
systemto preventscalding temperatures a t the faucets.Bothpartsare self-
contained andautomatic.
Starting Your Boiler
HOWA STEAMSYSTEM OPERATES
The waterin theboileris heateduntilit reaches the boilingpoint. As the
waterboilsit turnsintosteam.Thesteamrisesfromthe top of the water
throughthe supplymainto the radiationunits. As it passesthroughthe
radiators it releases its heatand condenses intowater.Thewaterreturns
to the boilerthrough the returnmain.
FILLINGSYSTEMWITH WATER
On steamheatingsystems the boileris partially filledwithwater. It is very
important to the properoperation of theentiresystemthat yourboilerbe
filledto the properlevel.Thecorrectwaterlevelon coldstartconditionis
about halfwayup the glasswater levelgauge as markedon the boiler
jacket.Tofill:
1. Closethe boilerdrain valve.
2. Openthevalvesat thetopand bottomoftheglasswaterlevelgauge.

3. OpenthefilI valveandatlowwaterto run intotheboiler.
WARNING - Neverrunwater intoa hotemptyboiler,
4. Allowboilertofill untilwater runsoutthe gaugedrainvalve.Then

IMPORTANT
Skimming a newsteamboileron an existingsystemmustbe doneseveral
timesto removeall oil,greaseand sediment. T hereshouldbe a teewith a
plug pipedto thesupplylineof theboilerin orderto properlyskimthe boiler.
Wheneverthe water in the glass gaugebecomesdiscolored, y our boiler
shouldbeskimmed.
Whenskimming, m akesureto pipethe openend of thetee to theflooror a
drain to preventanyonefrom being burnedby the steamand hot water
whichwillbe released.
TheFloatLowWaterCut-offshouldbe blowndownafterskimming. F ollowing
blowdown, a llowthe boilerto coolandthenaddfreshwaterslowly.
Thefloat chamber of the lowwatercut-offmustbe flushed cleanand maintained
clear of sedimentto allowfree movementof the float. This must be done
frequentlyduring initial operationof the boiler and at least once per week
thereafter. F ollowinstructions on tag attached to control.Neverthrottlea steam
radiator valve on a one-pipesystem.It must be fully open or fully closed.
Otherwise wateris heldin theradiatorunits. This willcauseknocking sounds.
Skimming maybe required againaftera few daysoperation.
CHECKING CONTROLS
To checkthe Low Water Cut-Off,turnoff powerto the boileror turn the
thermostat d own to the lowestsetting.Drainwater to belowthe visible
bottomof thewatergaugeglass.Turnpoweron andturnthe thermostat to
call for heat.Whenthe boileris equipped withthe floattype LWCO,the oil
burnershouldnotrun on a callfor heatwhenthe waterislow.
To check the pressurelimit, run the boiler until the pressure reaches
system demand. Then turn the pressurescrew and drop the pressure
settinguntilthe boilershutsdown. This will showthat the pressure limit is
operatingproperly.
If you haveinstalledyourown boiler,we recommend that youcall for an
inspectionby a service technician. The peace of mind and assured
performance are well worth the cost involved. He can quicklymake the
necessary c hecksandadjustments.
OIL BURNERADJUSTMENT

CHECKTHERMOSTAT O PERATION
When set abovetemperature indicated on the thermometer, boilerburner
should start. Make certainthe thermostat turns off the boilerwhenroom

whenroomtemperature f alls a few degrees.
Finally, s et thethermostat for thedesired temperature. Special c onditions in
yourhomeandthe location ofthethermostat willgovernthissetting.
