Distinctive Ringing

Distinctive Ringing is a service provided by many telephone companies that allow the
user to use up to two different telephone numbers, each with a distinctive ringing
pattern, on a single telephone line. In Australia this feature is typically referred to as
"Fax Duet".
If you subscribe to a distinctive ring service from your telephone company, you will
need to turn on the distinctive ring function. When this is done, your fax machine will
signal voice calls by the normal ring pattern, and fax transmissions by a special ring
pattern. In the case of a fax transmission, your fax machine will automatically answer
the call and receive the fax.
Distinctive ring is for the reception of FAX Messages. In this case, your fax will answer
and begin receiving a fax transmission after the number of rings set with Option Setting
4 (Setting the Number of Rings for Auto Reception).
Distinctive ring pattern: Three rings
Important:
• The distinctive ring function can only be used if you subscribe to a distinctive ring
service from your telephone company. Do not turn on distinctive ring if you are on a
normal line, as the fax machine will not operate properly.
Note: In some areas a distinctive ring pattern can be provided by the telephone
companies for modems. The fax cannot use the distinctive ring pattern that is in
use for the modem.
