Installing memory modules

The following notes describe the types of DIMMs that the computer supports and
other information that you must consider when you install DIMMs:
v When you restart the computer after you add or remove a DIMM, the computer
v The computer uses industry-standard PC2-5300 double-data-rate 2 (DDR2)
v The system board contains four DIMM connectors and supports two-way memory
v The optional DIMMs that are available for the computer are 512 MB, 1 GB, and 2
v The computer comes with either two 512 MB or two 1 GB DIMMs installed in the

1. Read the safety information that begins on page v, and the"Installation
guidelines" on page 29.
2. Turn off the computer and all attached devices (see "Turning off the computer"
on page 19); then, disconnect all power cords and external cables.
3. Remove the side cover (see "Removing the side cover" on page 35).
4. Remove the bezel (see "Removing the bezel" on page 36).
5. For easier access, place the computer on its side.
6. Remove the internal drive-bay bracket (see "Removing the internal drive-bay
bracket" on page 37).
7. Locate the DIMM connectors on the system board. Determine the connectors
into which you will install the DIMMs. Remember that DIMM 1 and DIMM 3
must be paired together (and must be the first installed pair) and DIMM 2 and
DIMM 4 must be paired together. The following table shows the DIMM
installation sequence.
