Removing or installing the system fans

This section provides instructions on how to remove or install the system fans.
Removing the system fans
Attention
Do not open your server or attempt any repair before reading and understanding the Safety Information and the
Warranty and Support Information on the ThinkServer Documentation DVD that comes with your product, and
Guidelines. To obtain a copy of the publications, go to:

This section provides instructions on how to remove the system fans.
To remove the system fans, do the following:
1. Remove all media from the drives and turn off all attached devices and the server. Then, disconnect all
power cords from electrical outlets and disconnect all cables that are connected to the server.
2. Remove the server cover. See Removing the server cover.
3. Remove the heat sink assembly. See "Removing the heat sink assembly" on page 71.
4. Disconnect the system fan cables on the system board. See Figure 8 "Locating other connectors on
the system board with an onboard 1068E SAS RAID" on page 33.
5. Carefully lift the system fan straight up to remove it out of the server. Then, place it on a static-protective
surface.
6. If you are instructed to return the system fans to the manufacturer, follow all packaging instructions, and
use any packaging materials that are supplied to you for shipping.
7. To install the system fans, see "Installing the system fans" on page 78.
