Optional-device problems

• Follow the suggested actions in the order in which they are listed in the Action column until the problem is
solved.
• See the parts listing in Chapter 7 "Parts listing, RD230 Types 1043, 1044, 4010, and 4011" on page 91 to
determine which components are customer replaceable units (CRUs) and which components are field
replaceable units (FRUs).
• If an action step is preceded by "(Trained service technician only)," that step must be performed only by
a trained service technician.
Symptom
A Lenovo optional device that
was just installed does not
work.
A Lenovo optional device that
used to work does not work
now.
The system fan noise is huge.

Power problems

not work (the server does not

Action
1. Make sure that:
• The device is designed for the server. For a list of the supported options for
your server, go to http://www.lenovo.com/thinkserver. On the ThinkServer
systems page, click Products ➙ Options.
• You followed the installation instructions that came with the device and the
device is installed correctly.
• You have not loosened any other installed devices or cables.
• You updated the configuration information in the Setup Utility program.
Whenever memory or any other device is changed, you must update the
configuration.
2. Reseat the device that you just installed.
3. Replace the device that you just installed.
1. Make sure that all of the hardware and cable connections for the device are
secure.
2. If the device comes with test instructions, use those instructions to test the
device.
3. If the failing device is an SCSI device, make sure that:
• The cables for all external SCSI devices are connected correctly.
• The last device in each SCSI chain, or the end of the SCSI cable, is
terminated correctly.
• Any external SCSI device is turned on. You must turn on an external SCSI
device before you turn on the server.
4. Reseat the failing device.
5. Replace the failing device.
The current BIOS is designed to automatically lower fan speeds with most RAID card
options. However, the LSI 8708 card needs a higher fan speed when the battery is
installed. When there is no battery installed in the card, the user have to change
the fan speed manually.
Action
1. Make sure that the power-control button is working correctly:
a. Disconnect the server power cords.
b. Reconnect the power cords.
