Troubleshooting: Thunderbolt Docking Stations
•
Confirm the computer has a Thunderbolt 3 port. Not all USB-C ports support Thunderbolt 3.
•
Check that the computer is completely up to date. (Operating system, drivers, BIOS,
Thunderbolt firmware, software, etc.)
•
Make sure the included Thunderbolt 3 host cable from StarTech.com is being used and is
connected to the correct port on the computer and docking station.
•
Make sure the included power supply is also being used.
•
Confirm the dock is directly connected to the computer.
•
Make sure the computer supports dual monitors over Thunderbolt 3. Not all computers support
dual display over a single Thunderbolt port. Check the computer manufacturer's documentation
or contact them directly.
•
Passive video adapter or adapter cables from DisplayPort to HDMI or DVI are not supported.
Active ones like DP2HD4K60S and DP2DVIS can be used.
•
Check that the Thunderbolt 3 cable between the computer and the dock is firmly connected.
•
Check that the power supply connection to the dock and to the power outlet is firmly
connected.
•
This is relevant for Windows computers only. If so, make sure the docking station has been
approved in the Thunderbolt software.
•
On some Windows PCs, you may need to approve the device in the Thunderbolt software
located in the system tray. Otherwise only video and charging will work through the dock. You
will need to be an Administrator on the computer to approve the device.
•
If video is flickering on the DP output, try using shorter DisplayPort cables or DP 1.4 cables like
DP14MM1M or DP14MM2M.
•
If using a Mac with Bootcamp to run Windows, test in macOS instead. Bootcamp configurations
may work but are not officially supported.
•
If possible, test the docking station on another model of computer. Does the problem follow the
dock to that computer?
