The illustrations in this chapter show the HP StorageWorks DAT 320 tape drive. The process is the
same for all models of tape drive.

Make sure you have the correct cable

The recommended and simplest way of connecting a tape drive to your HP or non-HP SAS server is
to purchase and install one of the supported HBAs. A cable is supplied with the tape drive to connect
to a dedicated HBA. The supplied cable may also be used to connect to an active external port on
the host SAS controller. This is described as Option 1.
NOTE:
Some controllers have an external connector, but its default state is inactive because the SAS channels
are in use for internal disks.
An alternative option for HP ProLiant servers is to connect to a spare internal port on the server's SAS
controller. This option uses one of the HP SAS split cables, which must be purchased separately. This
is described as Option 2.
The internal cabling option diverts one of the SAS data paths to the tape drive, which means that the
data path is no longer available for a hard disk drive. In a few instances, it may be necessary to
recable hard disk drive bays. This is described as Option 3.
NOTE:
If you connect an external drive to an internal SAS port, a spare PCI slot is required to thread the
cable through to the motherboard.
