NOTE: If engine is being started at beginning of work shift be sure to perform all "CHECK
AND SERVICES BEFORE STARTING UPPER ENGINE" (pages 8 through 10).
Starting Detroit Diesel and Caterpillar Engines (cold start)
1. It is recommended that the engine clutch be
engaged when starting the engine under normal
conditions. If it becomes necessary to reduce start-
ing motor lead during cold weather the clutch may
be disengaged.
CAUTION
If engine is started with clutch disengaged,
reduse engine speed to idle before engaging
clutch. This prevents an excessive shock load
on pump shaft.
Diesel engine ignition is accomplished by heat gen-
erated when fuel/air mixture is compressed within
the cylinders. Because this heat may be insufficient
to start a cold engine in cold weather, the use of
starting aids has become common practice.
Because of the wide variety of starting aids avail-
able for these engines it would be impractical to
attempt to provide specific instructions for their use
in this manual. Carefully follow instructions fur-
nished with your starting aid. Pay particular atten-
tion to manufacturer's warnings.
Starting Deutz Engines
1. It is recommended that the engine clutch be
engaged when starting the engine under normal
conditions. If it becomes necessary to reduce start-
ing motor load during cold weather the clutch may
be disengaged.
CAUTION
If engine is started with clutch disengaged,
reduce engine speed to idle before engaging
clutch. This prevents an excessive shock load
on pump shaft.
UPPER ENGINE OPERATION
2. Set throttle lever to approximately half governed
speed.
3. Turn ignition switch to full clockwise position to
engage starting motor. Release key immediately
when engine starts. If engine fails to start within
thirty seconds, release key and allow starting motor
to cool for a few minutes before trying again.
Wait till starting motor and flywheel have
stopped rotating before engaging starting
motor.
4. After engine starts, observe oil pressure gage. If
gage remains on zero for more than ten seconds,
stop engine and determine cause. Correct cause of
malfunction before restarting engine.
5. Warm up engine until water temperature reaches
minimum operating range: 160°F for Detroit
Diesel and 175°F for Caterpillar engines.
2. Pull throttle lever back approximately one quarter
of its travel distance.
3. Turn ignition switch clockwise to ON position.
ELEC. ON indicator light should glow.
NOTE: The Deutz engine is equipped with a flame
type preheater to assist in cold weather starting. Per-
form steps 4 and 5 only if conditions require starting
aid.
4. Raise PREHEAT/START knob approximately half
way until increased resistance is felt. With knob in
this position, preheater is activated.
