Carefully read p. 68 (BATTERY).

Remove the battery (complete removal),
see p. 70 (REMOVING THE BATTERY).

Prepare an appropriate battery charger.

NOTE
Do not remove the battery plugs;
without plugs the battery may be damaged.

Unscrew and remove the element plugs.
N
Check the electrolyte level, see p. 70
(CHECKING THE ELECTROLYTE LEV-

).

Connect the battery with a battery charg-
er.
NOTE
A recharge with an amperage
equal to 1/10th of the battery capacity is
recommended.

Switch on the battery charger.
N
After the recharging operation, check the
electrolyte level again and if necessary
top up with distilled water.
N
Replace the element plugs.
CAUTION
Reassemble the battery only 5-10 min-
utes after disconnecting the recharger,
since the battery continues to produce
gas for a short lapse of time.

Make sure that the ignition switch is in
position " ".

Put the battery in its container.
N
Connect the breather pipe.
CAUTION
Always connect the battery breather
pipe, to prevent the sulphuric acid va-
pours from corroding the electric sys-
tem, painted parts, rubber elements or
gaskets when they exit the breather
pipe itself.
The breather pipe must be connected in
such a way as to prevent any crushing,
otherwise the pressure inside the bat-
tery may increase with consequent risk
of damage.

Connect, in order, the positive (red) (+)
and negative (–) cable.
N
Cover the terminals with special grease
or Vaseline.
CAUTION
Upon reassembly the electric cables
must be guided in the correct position,
in such a way as not to crush them.
The negative cable (–) must not overlap
the positive cable (+) fastening, but it
must be positioned beside it, between
the battery and the compartment.

Push the battery inside the battery com-
partment.
N
Close the battery cover (1).
N
Screw and tighten the screw (2).
N
Put back the inspection cover, see p. 60
(REMOVING THE INSPECTION COV-
ER).
