Creating arrays using the Grid Mount System
Warning! In all types of installation, respect the safety limits that apply to load,
wind force and other safety precautions described in this manual.
Ensure that the maximum permitted total weight of the column is not exceeded
when adding rigging hardware.
Use one safety cable per fixture when securing fixtures together in a column.
Three types of installation are possible using the MAC One VDO Grid Mount System:
•
vertical free-hanging suspension,
•
suspension at an angle of less than 45 from vertical, and
•
suspension at an angle of between 45 and 90° from vertical.
Vertical free-hanging installation
To install the MAC One VDO Grid Mount System in a vertical free-hanging configuration:
1. Fasten two half-coupler rigging clamps to either a Dual VDO Header or two Single VDO Adapters
using high-strength steel (grade 8.8 or better) M12 bolts fastened into both the M12 threaded
suspension points of the Dual VDO Header [H] or the M12 threaded suspension point of each
Single VDO Adapter [C].
2. If you are using Single VDO Adapters:
-
Apply a small quantity of Loctite 243 to the threads of the M12 bolts before fastening them
into the Adapters.
-
To help you ensure correct spacing between fixtures, you can temporarily insert two VDO
Couplers into the top mounting slots [G] of a Grid Mount Ring and into the mounting slots of
each Single VDO Adapter when fastening Single VDO Adapters to the supporting structure.
3. Fasten both half-coupler clamps to the structure (rigging truss or similar) that will support the
array. The structure must be secure and able to safely hold all the weight that it will support.
4. Install two VDO Couplers in the mounting slots of either the Dual VDO Header [A] or Single VDO
Adapters [G]. Check that the VDO Couplers are fully inserted
into the mounting slots and are secure.
5. Ensure that the yellow safety indicators [P] located behind the
spring-loaded levers [N] on the VDO Couplers are not visible. If
a yellow safety indicator [P] is visible, the VDO Coupler is not
fully inserted into the mounting slot and the installation is not
safe. Rectify the problem by pushing the VDO Coupler fully into
its mounting slot so that the yellow indicator is no longer visible.
6. Slide the mounting slots [J] on top of the first Grid Mount Ring
over the VDO Couplers that you attached to the Dual VDO
Header or Single VDO Adapters. Check that the VDO Couplers
are fully inserted into the mounting slots and that no yellow
safety indicators are visible (see illustration on right).
7. Secure the VDO Grid Mount Ring and fixture with a safety cable
as described under 'Safety cables' on page 15.
8. Insert two VDO Couplers into the mounting slots on top of the
Grid Mount Ring that will be installed immediately below the first
Ring. Fasten this second Ring to the first Ring by inserting the
VDO Couplers into the mounting slots in the bottom of the first
Ring. Check that the VDO Couplers are fully inserted into the mounting slots and that no yellow
safety indicators are visible.
9. Secure this second Grid Mount Ring and fixture with a safety cable as described under 'Safety
cables' on page
15.
10. Continue adding Grid Mount Rings to the column as described above.
