ESD protection is an increasing concern. Due to the increased density of semiconductors used in recent Dell products, the sensitivity to static damage is now higher than in previous Dell products. For this reason, some previously approved methods of handling parts are no longer applicable.
1. Shut down your computer and disconnect the AC adapter. 2. Hold <B> key on the keyboard and press the power button for 3 seconds or until the Dell logo appears on the screen. 3. Press any key to continue.

Loosen the three captive screws that secure the base cover to the palm-rest and keyboard assembly. NOTE: Upon loosening the three captive screws, the base cover will open up creating a gap between the base cover and the palm-rest assembly.
Steps 1. Align the screw holes on the base cover with the screw holes on the palm-rest and keyboard assembly, and then snap the base cover into place. 2. Replace the four screws (M2x4) that secure the base cover to the palm-rest and keyboard assembly. 3.

Heat sink Removing the heat sink Prerequisites 1. Follow the procedure in Before working inside your computer. CAUTION: For maximum cooling of the processor, do not touch the heat transfer areas on the heat sink. The oils in your skin can reduce the heat transfer capability of the thermal grease. NOTE: The heat sink may become hot during normal operation.
Steps 1. In reverse sequential order (as indicated on the heat sink), loosen the four or seven captive screws that secure the heat sink to the system board. 2.
