By pressing the key with out stepping on the
brake, the ignition is switched on and off.
With the ignition on, the steering wheel is un-
locked.
You can only remove the key with the ignition
switched off. To do this, you have to press on
the key aga in. With an automat ic transm is-
sion, the se lector lever must be in the P posi -
tion .
When starting the engine, major e lectrica l
loads are switched off temporarily .
Afte r start ing a cold engine, t here may be a
brief period of increased noise because the oil
pressure must first bui ld up in the hydraulic
va lve adjusters. This is normal and not a cause
for concern.
If the engine should not start immediately,
the starting process is automatically stopped
after a short time. Repeat starting procedure .

This message appears if you do not step on
the brake pedal to start the engine on a vehi-
cle with an automatic transmission.
Engage Nor P to start engin e
This message appears when attempting
to
start the engine if the selector lever for the
automatic transmission is not in the P or N
position. The engine can on ly be started with
the selector in these posit ions .
Shift to P, otherwi se vehicle can roll away.
Doors do not lock if lever is not in P.
This message appears for safety reasons
a long with a warning signa l. It appears if the
selector lever for the automat ic transm iss ion
is not in the P position after the ign ition is
switched off . Move the selector lever to the P
position, otherwise the veh icle is not secured
against rolling away. You also cannot lock the
ve hicle using the locking butto n* on the door
handle or using the remote key.

WARNING
- Always take the key with you whenever
you leave your veh icle . Otherw ise, the
engine could be started or electrical
equ ipment such as the power windows
could be ope rated. This can lead to seri -
ous injury.
- Never leave children or persons req uiring
assistance una ttended in the ve hicle. The
doors can be locked using the remote
transmitter,
preventing people from es -
caping from the vehicle on their own in
the event of an emergency . Depending
on the time of year, peop le inside the ve-
hicle can be exposed to very high or very
low temperatures.
- Never remove the ignit ion key from the
ignit ion look while the vehicle is mov ing .
Otherwise, the steer ing lock could sud-
denly engage and you would not be able
to steer the vehicle .

Note
- In the event of a malfunction in the elec-
tronic ignit ion lock a symbol in the in-
st rument cluste r flashes with the mes-
sage Ignition lock defect ive .
-Avo id high engine speeds, fas t accelera-
tion or heavy engine loads while the en-
gine is sti ll cold. This could damage the
eng ine.

For the sake of the environment
To avoid unnecessary engine wear and to
reduce exhaust emissions, do not let you r
vehicle stand and warm up. Be ready to
drive off immed iat ely after sta rting your
vehicle . Mainta in moderate speed until the
engine is completely warm . Remember,
the engine perfo rms best at operating
temperature.

Tips
- If the key cannot be removed from the
ignition lock, you have to pull the me-
chanical key out of the maste r key in or-
der to be able to lock the vehicle . The
