It is essential that you change your oil at the

VW 502 00 . Your Limited New Vehicle War-
ranty does not cover damage or malfunctions
due to failure to follow recommended mainte-
nance and use requirements as set forth in
the Audi Owner's Manual and Warranty &
Maintenance booklet . Your dea ler will have to
deny warranty coverage unless you present to
the dea ler proof in the form of Service or Re-
pair Orders that all schedu led maintenance
was performed in a t imely manner .
Engine oil consumption
The engine in your vehicle depends on an ade-
quate amount of oil to lubricate and cool all
of its moving parts.
In order to provide effective lubrication and
cooling of internal engine components, all in-
ternal comb ustion eng ines consume a cert ain
amo unt of oil. Oil consumption varies from
engine to engine and may change significantly
over the life of the engine. Typically, engines
with a specified break-in per iod (see
¢ page 194) consume more oil during the
break-in per iod than they consume after oil
consumption has stabilized .
Under norma l conditions, the rate of oil con-
sumpt ion depends on the quality and viscosity
of the oil, the RPM (revolutions per minute) at
which the engine is operated, the amb ient
temperature and road condit ions. Furthe r fac-
tors are the amount of oil dilution from wate r
condensation or fuel residue and t he oxida-
tion level of the oil. As any engine is subject to

wear as mileage builds up, the oil consump -
tion may increase over time until replacement
of worn components may become necessary.
Wit h all these variables coming into play, no
standard rate of oil consumpt ion can be es-
tablished or specified. There is no alternative
to regular and frequent checking of the oil lev-
el, see Note .

Tips
- The oil pressure warning display.
is
not an indicator of the oil level. Do not
rely on it. Instead, check the oil level in
your engine at regu lar intervals, pref-
erably each time you refuel, and always
before going on a long trip.
- If you have the impression your engine
cons umes excessive amoun t s of oil, we
recommend th at you consult an author-
ized Audi dea ler to have the cause of
your concern properly diagnosed. Keep in
mind that the accurate measu rement of
oil consumption requ ires great care and
may take some t ime. An authorized Audi
dealer has instructions about how to
measu re oil consumption accurately.
