Detected windows < 0.5" x 0.5" are categorized as "background" and
subsequently, may be processed differently from other areas of the page.
Typically, these smaller areas are rendered with error diffusion, as opposed
to conventional halftones.
The following document types are susceptible to this particular problem:
• Originals with a lot of "small sized" content, such as maps with
"landmarks" on them
• Originals with light shades of yellow and blue
• Originals with a significant amount of black content with thin white lines
(1/4 inch or less) separating the black areas
NOTE: If this problem occurs, the document should be scanned in the
other orientation, scanned off of the platen glass, or scanned using another
Original Type.
Subsequently, documents containing pictorials with the following
characteristics:
NOTE: Originals with the following halftone characteristics may be
rendered incorrectly when scanned using the "Automatic" Original Type.
• Pictorials with line screen frequencies at or near 120lpi (118lpi —
122lpi)
• Pictorials rendered with "hybrid" screening (rendering using a halftone/
error diffusion mix)
• Pictorials of a poor quality halftone
• Pictorials with a line screen frequency greater than 200lpi
NOTE: All documents with a detected line frequency of 120lpi or lower are
rendered using error diffusion, and all documents with a detected line
frequency greater than 120lpi are rendered using a pure halftone.
If the "Pictorial Rendering" selection (found in the "More" button on the
"Image Quality" tab) is changed to "Threshold" for any "Original Type" other
than "Text and Line Art", the Brightness, Contrast, and Advanced Image
Adjustment controls will not provide any discernible difference in the overall
quality of the scanned image.
